It's been some time since I last posted to this blog. Some things have happened since the last posting that have kept me away from putting up content. But here we go.
The ultimate role in Harry Potter for the Fat Lady is the security of the Gryffindor common room. Generally she is entrusted with ensuring no one except members of this house is permitted into this room, although the actual access method appears to rely heavily on the password. Teachers can get in. The one key drawback to her security is that she only requires the password. So another house member, for example, a Ravenclaw, who knows the password, could get in. Of course, doing that is a serious breach of security and privacy. So who would be to blame? Well, everyone really. The person who gave or left the password open for anyone to get, the person entering the room, and the portrait for opening the door. The first two are easy to deal with: detention, lost house points, or another school punishment. What do you do about the Fat Lady? How do you handle a painting that screwed up?
Ah, but we must ask, did she really screw up? The answer is no. She is told only to ask for the password. It's actually the fault of the management at Hogwarts. Obviously changes would need to be made in order to fix the issue.
For this thought experiment, I am going to step away from the exact Harry Potter canon and replace her with a modern equivalent: Lady Darlene, an AI-augmented enchanted portrait responsible for guarding a dormitory in a magical school.
In a modern era with AI possibly attached, we would build a layered system that includes the following.
So if we take the step of moving out of the wizarding world and moving into our reality, what would an enhanced modern AI augmented portrait security model look like?
Lady Darlene's Security Layers
1. Something you know: password
The traditional password stays, but it becomes only one layer.
- Changes automatically on a schedule. Daily, weekly, biweekly, or monthly.
- Different passwords for students, prefects, professors, and emergency access. Never to be shared with anyone.
- No repeated or easily guessable passwords. So birthdays and repeated numbers and letters won't do. A password like bbb4477 would not be good, but something like bf23A-1 would.
- Passwords expire if suspected to be compromised.
So if someone from another dorm overhears the password, that alone would not be enough.
2. Something you are: identity recognition
Lady Darlene could use AI-like recognition:
- Face recognition
- Voice recognition
- Gait/posture recognition
- Wand-signature recognition
- Magical aura recognition
In this context, this could be framed as "I know every student, prefect, and teacher by face, voice, wand resonance, and magical signature.”
So a student would need to both know the password and be recognized as an authorized dorm member.
3. Something you have: a magical token
Each authorized student could have a “credential”:
- enchanted house badge
- wand-linked access charm
- A coloured identity marker like a jacket or tie, or a uniform for each dorm.
- prefect-issued temporary pass
- enchanted school ID
If stolen, it would fail because it must match the student’s magical signature.
4. Context-aware access
Lady Darlene would track time; she would know the following.
- Is it curfew?
- Is the student injured or distressed?
- Is the student with someone from another house?
- Is there a school-wide lockdown?
- Is the student under a potion?
- Has this person tried several wrong passwords?
- Did they recently come from a restricted corridor?
Example: “Correct password, Mr. Finnigan, but you are attempting entry at 2:47 a.m. with two unauthorized students behind you. Please wait while I notify your house prefect or leader.”
5. Advanced tools to defend against hacking
Because the school has magical impersonation risks, Lady Darlene would need defences against:
- Transformation potions
- glamour charms that hide facial and other physical features.
- invisibility cloaks
- Charms that cause confusion
- Curses that cause a person to do another person's bidding.
- voice-mimicking spells
Security check: "Password accepted. Identity is uncertain. Please present a wand and answer a memory-based challenge.”
6. Adaptive challenge questions
Instead of fixed questions, Lady Darlene could ask low-risk personal questions only the real student would likely know:
- “Who was your Transfiguration partner yesterday?”
- “Which bed is yours in the dormitory?”
- “What did you complain about at breakfast?”
- “What password did I refuse you with last month?”
The check would avoid sensitive personal data. The school would not want Lady Darlene asking private questions in a corridor.
What happens when someone fails?
Low-risk failure
Someone forgets the password: “Password incorrect. Please contact a prefect.”
No alarm, just denial.
Medium-risk failure
Correct password, wrong identity: “Password accepted, identity rejected. Access denied.”
A silent notification goes to:
- Head of House
- prefect on duty
- castle security portraits
High-risk failure
Disguise, coercion, dark magic, or repeated attempts:
- portrait locks down
- Nearby portraits start tracking the intruder
- Corridor doors might lock the person in a segment of the corridor
- Professors are alerted along with security
- entrance relocates or seals magically
Example entry flow
A normal student arrives:
- Student says password.
- Lady Darlene recognizes face and voice.
- Wand aura matches known profile.
- Context is normal.
- Door opens.
Another house student arrives with the password:
- Student says correct password.
- Lady Darlene recognizes them as another house student.
- Door stays closed.
- Event is logged. The student is ordered to leave.
- The head of the dorm is notified if suspicious or they refuse to leave.
A student or another unknown person under the influence of a spell, charm potion, or impersonator of staff arrives:
- Correct face.
- Correct voice.
- Magical signature mismatch.
- Lady Darlene asks a challenge question.
- If failed, she locks the entrance and alerts staff.
Privacy and fairness rules
A modern system should also protect students from over-surveillance.
Good policies:
- Logs only record access attempts, not private conversations.
- Only Heads of House and the Headmaster can review serious incidents.
- Data expires after a set period.
- No public shaming by portraits.
- Emergency override exists for medical danger.
- Students can appeal false denials.
Otherwise, Lady Darlene becomes less “guardian portrait” and more “creepy magical surveillance painting.”
Corrective action for Lady Darlene if there is a breach
If there’s a breach, you don’t just blame her. You audit the whole system:
- Was the password compromised?
- Did identity recognition fail?
- Was she Confunded?
- Did an authorized student let someone in?
- Were emergency settings abused?
- Did staff forget to revoke access?
Then you update:
- access rules
- recognition charms
- password rotation
- staff alerts
- anti-disguise protections
Express Emotion: She behaves as if she has emotions. She can be
- offended
- frightened
- proud
- annoyed
- stubborn
- dramatic
- embarrassed
For example, when Sirius Black attacks the Fat Lady portrait in Prisoner of Azkaban, she is clearly terrified and refuses to return to her post unless she has protection. That is more than a simple “door program” response. So emotionally, she seems quite person-like. So we could make it so Lady Darlene feels that way as well.
Psychological traits: yes, with limits Lady Darlene could have them.
She could show psychological traits like
- memory
- preferences
- judgment
- fear responses
- social awareness
- a sense of duty
- recognition of people
- willingness or unwillingness to cooperate
She can talk, make decisions, and react to situations. So she is not just a decorative painting or a magical recording.
But there are limits. Portraits in Harry Potter are generally understood to be impressions or magical simulations of people, not the full person. They may copy personality, habits, and memories, especially if made from a real person, but they are not equal to a living human mind.
So the Fat Lady in the films and books appears to have a limited artificial/magical consciousness.
So what would we do with our portrait? Lady Darlene in my mind would be built with some of the emotional capabilities listed above along with some others, and I absolutely would have the psychological aspects built in as well. As for a spiritual or soul-like quality, maybe, but most likely not.
The key point is this: in the original books and films, we see a flamboyant, often dramatic, sometimes cheeky character who guards a dorm. She has also been known to leave her frame and get drunk a few times and one time let Harry in without the password due to being so distraught over Dumbledore's death.
In our modern context I would keep some of the emotions but build a qualified guardian who could professionally handle security. Sure Lady Darlene could be funny or annoyed. And when not needed, she could be permitted to move to other portraits. But, generally speaking, she is the central part of a dorm's security structure. Which means she must be on call, alert, and professional. With good judgment and advanced tools to prevent breaches. Because it is her primary role to protect teenagers attending a boarding school.
In short, a modernized Fat Lady would use the password only as the first step. The password gets you considered; identity, authorization, and context get you inside.
Thanks for reading.
I will be adding more content to this blog soon. So come back and check to see what I have up soon.
A quick caveat: AI should not mean automatic trust. In this thought experiment, Lady Darlene’s AI tools would support her judgment, not replace human oversight. Any system guarding students would still need accountability, privacy limits, and adults responsible for final decisions.
Editorial note: I used AI tools to help refine wording and structure. The concept, views, and final
editorial decisions are my own.
